This free CPD workshop, aimed at secondary school History teachers, offers an overview of Jewish life and contributions to Britain across nearly 1,000 years. It is directly linked to GCSE History papers on migration and will equip teachers with the knowledge and resources to deliver this segment of the National Curriculum with confidence. We will also offer attendees the opportunity to book a free follow-up workshop delivered by the Centre to their students.
Most UK students encounter Jews primarily in the context of the Holocaust, leading to a disproportionate focus on victimhood and thus distorted perceptions about who Jews are and their long history in Britain. Our workshop, by contrast, presents a more rounded and balanced portrayal of Jews’ contributions to British culture and society.
The workshop will be held online to ensure it is accessible to teachers around the UK. It has been scheduled for a time least likely to clash with teaching responsibilities, but it will also be recorded and placed online for those unable to attend the original event.
The Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre has significant experience in this field. In just eighteen months of operation we have reached over 3,000 students in schools across England, Scotland and Wales, with superlative feedback. We will deliver an inspiring, engaging and enriching workshop that will offer teachers a deeper insight into Jewish lives and experiences, and how they have helped shape British history.
