Once Upon a Time in the East: Jews in the GDR

This talk will discuss Jewish life in the GDR, the Eastern (socialist) part of Germany between 1949-1989. Referencing key historical dates in the history of Jews in the GDR, as well as key Jewish cultural figures, politicians and community actors, Professor Gelbin will outline the positions of social participation and political agency available to Jews in the authoritarian regime.

Professor Cathy S. Gelbin

Cathy S. Gelbin (PhD, MA Cornell University) is a film historian and cultural studies scholar with special interests in European life and its Jewish cultures. Her work on feature film, video testimony, literary texts and live art has focused on Holocaust representations and the dynamics of German-speaking Jewish culture. She is co-editor of the Leo Baeck Institute Year Book for the Study of German-Jewish History and Culture (Oxford Journals) and serves on the Board of Directors and Trustees of the Leo Baeck Institute London. Her book publications include The Golem Returns: From German Romantic Literature to Global Jewish CultureJewish Culture in the Age of Globalization; and Cosmopolitanisms and the Jews.
