Teaching Jewish Histories

27 March at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Sir Martin Gilbert Learning Centre is delighted to be presenting a webinar on teaching Jewish histories for the Historical Assocation’s ‘Diverse histories in the secondary curriculum in the 2020s’ series. The session is aimed at secondary school history teachers.

Where Jews appear on school curricula, they tend to appear as victims, particularly in the context of the Nazi genocide. The vibrant diversity of Jewish life in preceding centuries is underexplored, and students are given little context for understanding the growth of antisemitism. This webinar will delve into this vibrant richness and in order provide a necessary preface for study of the Holocaust, will outline an enquiry which highlights the experiences of Jewish refugees who came to Britain in the 1930s and the responses they encountered in their local communities and in British society more broadly.
