Join Lady Esther Gilbert as she zooms through 18 countries, presenting historical characters, among them a German in Denmark, a Dutchman in Lithuania, and a Levi who was upgraded to a Cohen, plus Jewish scholars, traitors, martyrs and heroes.
In their years together Sir Martin and Esther travelled widely and made a point of visiting Jewish sites and synagogues on their travels. Her talk will focus on some of those sites that are particularly laden with historical significance, an A to Z of wanderings through Jewish history: from Anchorage to Zaverichchya, the known, the not-so-known and the really out of the way.
Date/time: Thursday 1 July 2021, 7.00-8.15pm (UK)
Cost: Free, donations welcome
From 2000 to 2007 she created Holocaust Memoir Digest, which uses excerpts from published survivor memoirs to study aspects of the Holocaust. Three volumes were published by Vallentine Mitchell. She wrote and taught an introductory course on the Holocaust for university students.
Since Sir Martin became ill in 2012 she has worked to keep his work in print and his legacy alive. She redesigned his website https://www.martingilbert.com/ and creates monthly e-newsletters that focus on his work and approach.
